Vitamins & Minerals

Goats require the correct balance of energy, protein, minerals, vitamins and water for maximum lactation, growth and reproduction output.

An imbalance can lead to sob-optimal performance and health and this obviously affects the profitability of your farm operation. Insufficient energy supply or a negative energy balance is often regarded as the most common form of infertility due to nutrition.

A lack of dietary protein, is directly related to a delay at the start of puberty (maturity) and an increase in the number of days that the does are ‘open’ and not pregnant. Note however, that too much crude protein can also lead to lower reproduction performance.

Trace minerals are of the utmost importance in the reproduction function. Calcium, Vitamins A,D &E and phosphorus are key to a successful feeding and nutritional plan for your goats.

A vitamin A deficiency leads to reproductive disorders such as delayed puberty (maturity), low conception rates, abortions in late gestation and also placental retention. Do not overlook this importance of Vitamin A in your goats!

Vitamin E, another key vitamin, plays a major role, in the immune system of your goats. Vitamin E, is known for reducing incidences of retained placentas, metritis and cystic ovaries.

Selenium, is also extremely important as it is closely related to fertility and the immune system.

Consult your local nutritional and / or animal specialist for advise on the vital vitamins and minerals required by your goats and follow a good management plan in ensuring goats get what they need
