SADC Climate Services Send Cyclone Batsaria Warning
The SADC Climate Services Centre has released a statement warning member states about Tropical Cyclone BATSIRAI which it is said to be evolving over the south-west Indian Ocean. The cyclone is likely to affect the islands of Republic of Mauritius during the next 3 days. As a result, heavy rainfall is expected over other regions of the SADC due to Tropical Cyclone BATSIRAI and other active weather systems.
The Cyclone is expected to first affect Rodrigues and then St Brandon (islands of Republic of Mauritius) later today ( 31st January 2022). The TC BATSIRAI is evolving in a favourable environment and is expected to intensify further into an Intense Tropical Cyclone and affect main island Mauritius between 1st and 2nd February 2022.
Heavy rainfall is expected over the SADC region from the period of 31st January to 4th February 2022. Share on XThe tropical cyclone BATSIRAI will move towards the west. On this trajectory, there is a possibility that BATSIRAI may also affect central parts of Madagascar. However, the level of uncertainty at present is relatively high.
Other parts of SADC region that will experience increased rainfall during the next couples of days include Comoros, Seychelles, northern Malawi, Namibia, whole United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, east Angola, and parts of South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
