Ghanzi: Home of The Delicious Hollandia Homemade Ice Cream

Are you attending this year’s Ghanzi Show? If yeas then be sure to check out the iconic Hollandia Trading, a restaurant located in the oldest building in the Ghanzi township that once served as Ghanzi’s only filling station, wholesale and general dealer. That was way back in 1948. Back then when the town had no tarred roads. Most of those that imbibed couldn’t even dream of relaxing with a cold one, let alone an ice cream.

Talking about ice cream, Hollandia Trading is the home to a delicious homemade ice cream, one of the best in the country, according to those that have already tasted it. Hollandia Homemade Ice Cream is one of the few ice cream ventures in Botswana.   

The Hollandia Homemade Ice Cream brand was developed by three talented friends from Ghanzi. They had the vision, the passion and the drive that enabled them to develop the brand within a week including the simple, but sleek packaging of the ice cream. The team is made up of the creative Su-Lize Viljoen who is in charge of graphic designing, the visionary Adele Viljoen who is in charge of brand development and the recipe master, Hanri Ehlers, who is mainly in charge of product development.

As one can imagine, Ghanzi being very far from the more developed eastern side of the Botswana, as well as South Africa where the country gets most of its supplies, provides a challenge when it comes to business ventures. This has forced the owners of the Ice Cream to be creative, and work with products that are available locally and those that that are in season. 

“We love developing new recipes and trying out new food combinations. This enables us to change our menu frequently in sync with seasonal produce. Our ice cream is rich, creamy and contains only the best ingredients.  Currently we have the following flavours, homemade fudge, pecan nuts, crushed Oreo biscuits and real coffee.” Explains Hanri.

She goes on to explain that their home made coffee flavoured ice cream is a favourite at special events around the town and thoroughly enjoyed by family and friends a good especially after Sunday lunch.

The three friends are currently working on their recipe book, simply titled Kalahari Kitchen, in which they share amazing recipes and interesting stories from the Kalahari. The book will be published later this year (2022).

Hollandia Homemade Ice Cream is available in 1L or 500ml and it is currently sold at We Meat Again in Delmas, South Africa and at Hollandia Trading in Ghanzi, with distribution to Maun and Gaborone.
