MoA Suspends Importation of Pigs and Their Fresh Produce from South Africa
Botswana’s Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security has suspended the importation of pigs and their fresh products following an outbreak of Foot and Mouth (FMD) in cattle in the North-West province, South Africa.
A media release from the ministry says the outbreak of the disease is still active in Limpopo and Kwazulu-Natal province. “Importation of pig and their fresh products from FMD free compartments in RSA is suspended including importation of cloven-hooved animals that were in quarantine prior to the outbreaks in Kwazulu Natal,” says the release.
The release explains that all imports permits issued concerning the above-listed items are cancelled with immediate effect.The farming community and stakeholders are urged to be vigilant and look out for clinical signs of the disease which include lameness and drooling as the ministry continues to monitor the disease situation.
