Honorable Gare visits farms in the United Arab Emirates

In his continued efforts to attract inward investment into Botswana’s agricultural sector, Honorable Karabo Socraat Gare and his delegation paid official visits to two farms in the United Arab Emirates. From the site visits the delegation got an in-depth appreciation of Aquaponic and Dairy Farming which are key agricultural sectors for the UAE. The delegation toured the farms to benchmark the production process along with their business models.

Green Technology has over the years the world over created the best and highest yielding indoor environment for high density cultivation of plants. This has proven to be an easy operation providing maximum efficiency coupled with low operational costs. Farmers can now grow high quality organic produce providing unique flavours and unmatched taste in any environment in the world independently from land and climate conditions.

The delegation held in-depth discussions on the opportunities of how this method of farming could be taken to Botswana through skills transfer. Honourable Gare made mention of how Botswana presents itself as the country of choice to adopt these methods more-so that they are both economic and environmentally friendly. In their second visit, the delegation visited a dairy production farm with the intention to equally benchmark.

The farm has been in operation since 1989 and has attained a significant market share of the dairy industry in the United Arab Emirates. With over 17 500 cattle the farm prides itself on having a zero-waste policy ensuring it uses all of its products in a sustainable manner... From the visits, Honorable Gare discussed how these practices if implemented and applied well with investors could greatly benefit the country as agriculture remains key in the Government of Botswana’s Reset Agenda. The Minister explained to the management of the farms that Botswana is more than willing to facilitate and accommodate business from the UAE. The Minister concluded both meetings by imploring the two farms to honor his invitation to explore opportunity in Botswana.
