The Agricultural sector continues to record high number of expatriates in Botswana

According to the latest figures from Statistics Botswana, the total number of work permit holders that were valid as of the end of June 2021 was 3,458. Out of this total, employees accounted for 85.2% while self-employed accounted for 14.8%. Overall males accounted for the majority of work permit holders with 75% of total work permit holders, with females in the minority at 25%.

The highest proportion of work permit holders by industry were registered for Agriculture with 25%, followed by Education with 14.5% and Construction with 13.9% of work permit holders... Click To Tweet

Agriculture also recorded the highest proportion for the employee work permit holders’ category with 27.6%, followed by Education with 16.7%. The only category where Agriculture wasn’t at the top was in the self-employed work permit holders’ category, where Wholesale & Retail Trade was above other industries, recording 27.0% of work permit holders, followed by Real Estate and Manufacturing at 13.9 percent and 10.7% respectively.

South Africa recorded the highest number of Self-employed persons (29.7%) as compared to other countries, while Zimbabwe has the highest number of employees (50.7%).

The majority of work permit holders by country of origin were from Zimbabwe at 44.8%, followed by South Africa with14.5% and Indian Sub-Continent with 10.2%.
